Effect of Simvastatin On The Extraction Socket Healing In Predinosolone Induced Osteoporotic Mandible Of Albino Rat (Histological and Immunohistochemical study)

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a major health problem affecting both men and women. It has deleterious effects on wound healing. Statins are lipid lowering agents, moreover they seem to have a beneficial effect on bone wound healing as extraction socket. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of Simvastatin on the extraction socket healing in Prednisolone induced osteoporotic mandible of albino rat.We used Forty two male albino rats divided into three groups control group which received a distilled water, Prednisolone group which received 40 mg/ kg Prednisoloneand Simvastatin + Prednisolone group which received 40 mg/ kg Prednisolone+ 20mg/ kg/daySimvastatin. Each group were subdivided into two subgroups according to the date of rats killing after extraction: subgroup A (10 days) and subgroup B (21 days). Samples of extraction sockets were examined by routine histological examination and osteonectin immunostaining. Results:Prednisolone decreased the bone trabecular thickness and the active osteoblasts numbers and increased the osteoclasts.While, Simvastatinincreases bone trabecular thickness and active osteoblast numbers. All the previous data were statistically significant. Conclusion:Prednisolone causes delayed healing of the extraction socket in both early and late stages of healing. Simvastatin co- administration with Prednisolone enhances the socket healing.
