STUDIES OF NEONATAL MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY RATES IN INTERMEDIATE CARE UNIT OF THE NEW CHILDREN HOSPITAL CAIRO UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This retrospective study was conducted over a period of 1 year .in the intermediate care unit in Cairo University Hospital, aiming at identifying the mortality rates .of neonates and to report the causes of mortality of cases understudy.

The total number of patients was 288 infants, number of males was 167 (58%) while number offemales was 121 (42%).

The overall mortality of neonates was 34.7%.

Mortality was influenced by gestational age, as the age of 2 neonates ranged from 28 weeks till the end of 29 weeks (both of them survived), 5 neonates aging from 30 w to 31 weeks (3 of them died), 21 neonates aging from 32 w to 33 weeks (13 of them died), 35 neonates aging from34 w to 35 weeks (16 of them died), The rest of cases (225 neonates) aging from 36 w to 40 weeks (68 of them died).

Mortality was also influenced by birth weight, as follows, i 4 neonates wheighing from 1001 to 1499 grns (5 of them died), 91 neonates wheighing from 1500 to 2499 grns (40 of them died) while 183 neonates wheighing more than 2500 grns (41 of them died).
