PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF ANEMIA IN SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA IN THE HEAD AND NECK TREATED WITH CURATIVE RADIATION THERAPY ALONE

Mostafa Shawkey Ibrahim;

Abstract

Moderate anemia appeared to be an independent prognostic factor in Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck treated with radiation therapy alone.

An association between hemoglobin concentration and .outcome has been suggested in several clinical studies in the head and neck cancers and other sites.

Our retrospective study was designed to determine the importance of anemia as a prognostic factor in cases of squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region treated

By external beam radiation alone in NEMROCK between 1994 to

1998. However cases with cancer larynx were taken as representative group for all cases.

Between March 1994 to September 1998 patients were studied for the effect of pretreatment• Hb level on loco-regional control and the two and five year suivival.

Out of 177 patients with cancer larynx 64 cases were included in the study. According to the definition of W.H.O of anemia cut of point of anemia was taken as 13.5g/dl for men and 12g/dl for women.

Clinical trials have been conducted to improve oxygen delivery to twnors by administration of hyperbaric oxygen or by transfusing red blood cells in anemic patients. Results in these trials have generally favored the treated patients, these fmdings have failed to influence clinical practice,
