Samer Ahmed Atef;

Abstract

The incidence of radical prostatectomy in medicare recipients increased nearly six folds between 1984 and 1990. '

Radical procedures for pelvic malignancy retroperitoneal operations and vascular surgery commonly lead to erectile or ejaculatory disturbance .

Recent advances in understanding of autonomic ' neuroanatomy have led to refinements in technique which allow preservation of sexual function in many patients .

With the introduction of the technique of nerve- 1
sparing radical prostatectomy ( NSRP ) in 1983 .
It was believed that the incidence of postoperative erectile dysfunction would be dramatically reduced

Recent studies that even in men who have undergone bilateral nerve sparing procedures a significant incidence ofposroperative erectile dysfunction ensues .

It is now thought that such post NSRP erectile impairment may have a vascular basis.
