Abstract
Head injury, involving an estimated 10 million cases a year worldwide, is a major cause of death and disability among a predominantly young population.
During the year 2011 there was a significant increase in the percentage of injuries occurring in the street in Egypt, there was also a significant rise in the percentage of homicidal injuries especially those caused from non-rifled weapons, which is consistent with the events occurring in Egypt in this year.
Epidemiological studies are an important step towards goal-directed organized injury prevention, bearing in mind methodological considerations when comparing results. Previous studies on traumatic head injuries have indicated that each geographical area may have special characteristics with regard to incidence, age, gender distribution and severity of injury. Therefore, care should be taken when estimating nationwide traumatic head injuries from local samples.
This study aimed to portray the pattern of head injuries via a cross-sectional hospital-based study on patients presented to emergency room, El-Demerdash , Ain Shams University hospitals during the period from January 2010 to December 2011 and to evaluate and compare the difference in the pattern and outcome of head injuries between year 2010 versus 2011.
