An Intervention Program for Improving Sleep Quality among Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract


Nursing has a vital role in raising the levels of sleep quality because the nurse is responsible for implementing of sleep hygiene. The nursing staff is working continuously to improve the healthy atmosphere of patients, to achieve appropriate healthy sleep environment (Geiger & Trinkoff, 2012).
Sleep refers to “an active physiologic process that is fundamentally necessary for well being and optimal functioning” of the human body, and comment that “sleep is vital; no sleep equals death.” Sleep deprivation is thought to be the most immediate and worst consequences associated with schizophrenia (Blachowicz & Letizia, 2012).
In addition to a decrease in mental abilities relating to sleepiness, studies have reported that the effects of going without sleep for as long as 24 hours are similar to drinking two to three alcoholic beverages (Falleti & Mcstephen, 2013).
Sleep disturbances are common in patients with schizophreniaMonti, (2011); it may either due to distressing symptoms or side effects of antipsychotic medications (Benson, 2008 & Monti, 2011).
Nursing is responsible for a vital role of sleep hygiene, that describes good sleep habits, through developing a set of guidelines and tips which are designed to enhance good sleep
