STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF DISCONTINUING IRON VERSUS GIVING SHORT TERM ASCORBIC ACID WITH IRON ON SERUM FERRITIN IN HAEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS

Marina IshakRamzy;

Abstract

The study was performed to compare the effect of giving short term intravenous ascorbic acid as adjuvant therapy with maintenance dose iron versus stopping iron supplements on Hb level, iron parameters & CRP.
The Study was performed on 50 patients randomly divided into two groups.
Patients of group 1 will discontinue iron supplements & patients of group 2 will be given ascorbic acid as adjuvant therapy with maintenance dose of iron.
Patients in both groups after having medical consent were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, CBC, Kiney functions (s.urea, s.creat&s.Alb) , Iron profile, Ca , Po4, PTH, ESR & CRP.
There wasn’t significant difference between patients of both groups as regard demographic & laboratory data.
Results of the study show:
Significant increasein Hgb level in group 2.
Significant decreasein ferritin level in both groups of the study.
Significant decrease in serum iron level in group 2.
While data shows increase in TIBC level in group1,it shows decrease in TIBC level in group 2.
Decrease in TSAT level in group 1, while it increases in group 2.
