ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS FOR ADULT CANCER PATIENTS

Abstract
Cancer is an incluvive term for variety of malignant neoplastic diseases. Neoplastic diseases are varying from rare to common and can effect all age groups. Diet and nutrition are becoming a popular topic in the field of nutrition therapy for cancer patients.
The purposes of this study were to identify which parameters are most useful to be used for nutritional assessment in cancer patients. Also to investigate food attitude of patients and to evaluate hospital diet that offered to them.
This study was carried out on 100 cancer patients (70 males, 30 females) aged 18- 60+ years, 55 of those living in urban, 45 living in rural), they were classified into 10 groups based on type of malignancy. Twenty-seven patients suffered from gastrointestinal cancer, twenty-one patients suffered from lymphomas, twelve patients suffered from breast cancer, ten patients suffered from leukemia, nine patients suffered from genitourinary cancer, eight patients suffered from lung cancer, five patients suffered from head and neck cancer, five patients suffered from ovarian cancer, two patients suffered from brain tumors and one patient had soft tissue sarcoma.
All the one-hundred patients were submitted to nutrition assessment through utilizing different methods of assessment such as; socioeconomic status, '24 hours recall, food habit', anthropometric measurements as
'weight, height, triceps skin fold', laboratory testes as
,hemoglobin' and medical assessment.
