CEPHALOMETRIC DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR THE VERTICAL RELATIONS OF ANTERIOR TEETH

MARWA IBRAHIM ABDELDAYEM;

Abstract

Experience has taught many orthodontists that controlling the vertical component of malocclusion is one of the most difficult tasks of our profession.

During the course of treatment, a certain malocclusion with a moderate overbite can demonstrate an anterior open-bite leading to the conclusion that the initial diagnosis was either incomplete or inadequate since it did not clearly define the differential diagnosis
between a true open- bite and a tendency towards one.

It is therefore highly desirable to be able to diagnose the correct vertical relation before starting treatment in order that we can deal with any unexpected challenges during the course of treatment.

Determining the etiology of the case is of major importance. It must be decided whether the open-bite case is a true skeletal dysplasia or a habitual problem involving only the dentoalveolar structures. Also, identifying the skeletal pattern of an open bite, will be most helpful in the treatment of the condition or preventing it from occurring and will also guide us to a mechanic system that will not
aggravate the condition. (t)
