Abstract
The atm of this essay is to give a full history about bone•
banking.
The literature revtew included the history of bone banking. The biology and immunology of bone grafting, bone banking procedures, indications and complications of allografts. The history of bone banking was discussed in a chronological order starting from the old trials done by Jlfacewm (1881). Until our present time when the Health Care Financing Administration enacted regulation in an attempt to increase the number of organ donors on August 21, 1998. The immunology of bone grafts started discussing the basic concept of immune system in general and immune response to bone allograft in particular. Then, the bone transplant biology was discussed. Incorporation of bone allograft remains an osteoinductive process. The factors affecting structural allograft incorporation, fate of bone allograft, mechanism involved in rejection as well as methods used to decrease the immunogenicity of bone allograft were discussed in details.
Bone banking procedures includes, organization and admin istration structure, donor selection, tissue procurement, tissue retrieval, tissue processing, tissue storage, record keeping and internal safety audit system. The source of banked tissue is either living donor or cadavers.
