Nutritional assessment of cases of Pre-eclampsia
Randa Mohamed Mortada El- Taweel;
Abstract
This study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The aim of the study is to nutritionally assess a group of preeclamptic pregnant ladies and compare them to a group of normal pregnant women and therefore identify any existent dietary risk factor that might predispose to preclampsia.
It is a case control study which involved 50 cases of preeclampsia and 50 normal pregnant women. Cases and Control groups were matched for age group, parity and gestational age. Both groups had the following parameters assessed: dietary intake, routine blood investigations, serum magnesium, serum calcium, LDL Cholesterol, serum triglycerides in addition to a full Medical, obstetric and past history as well as general physical examination.
The results of this study showed that the mean value of serum calcium among the control group and cases were comparable ( mean values for the control =8.9 mg/dl and for cases= 9.0 mg/dl ), moreover, the Cases had a lower serum magnesium level with statistical insignificant differences. (mean value=
1.76 mg /dl) compared to the control group (mean value= 1.86
mg/dl). however, comparison between the studied groups showed that cases of preeclampsia had statistically significant higher serum cholesterol levels and lower HDL than control group.
