hronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the most prevalent conditions that affect modern society with increasing frequency. This condition has got a great impact on the physical function and the social life. Also, it affects the quality of life in an adverse way, and leads to increased absence from work and decreased production.
Many treatment methods have been described for chronic low back pain, but most of them are unsatisfactory.Acupuncture and mesotherapy are among the frequently used methods in patients with chronic low back.
This study tested the effectiveness of conventional acupuncture, mesotherapy in trigger points, and mesotherapy in acupuncture points in the management of chronic low back pain.
Three groups of patients were randomly assigned into three equal groups (20 patients each). The first group (group "A") received classical acupuncture therapy, one session per week for four successive weeks. The second group (group "B") received mesotherapy in 5 trigger points in taut bands of skeletal muscles, once per week for 4 successive weeks. The third group (group "C") received mesotherapy in acupuncture points, once per week for 4 weeks.
Pain intensity was assessed in the three groups by the visual analogue scale, once before the start of the study and after completion of the treatment.
Effect on patient social activity, work and quality of life were recorded before and after treatment using the SF-36 questionnaire. Again, effect on dosage of pharmacological drugs used for pain relief was recorded. Data were recorded immediately after completion of treatment, 4 weeks and 3 months after treatment.
Both acupuncture and mesotherapy havedecreased pain intensity and improved quality of lifeand the dose of oral analgesic medications was reduced markedly. Our results of mesotherapy in acupuncture points has shown more improvement in pain intensity and quality of life in comparison to classical acupuncture and mesotherapy in the trigger points. These results were found immediately after treatment and three months later.
