EVALUATION OF THE CENTRAL .,, AUDITORY NERVOUS SYSTEM IN APHASIC PATIENTS: A CLINICAL AND ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIC STUDY

Abstract
Background: it is still controversial if the language behavior in aphasic patients are due to a central auditory processing disorder, or due to a higher cognitive or linguistic deficits.
Aim: the aim of the present study was to evaluate the central auditory nervous system (CANS) in aphasic patients, and to correlate these central auditory processing behaviors to the clinical, linguistic and radiological fmdings.
Material: the study group were 18 aphasic patients presented to the Main University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland, with an equal number of age, sex, and education-matched normal controls. Both patients and controls had bilateral within normal pure tone averages.
