The Potential Use of CA-125 as a biomarker for Prediction of Pre-Eclampsia in Women with Singleton Pregnancies

Mohamed Sameh Saad Elsewefy;

Abstract

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy occur in nearly 7-10% of all pregnancies. Amongst them, preeclampsia is a major cause of high risk pregnancies. Preeclampsia is characterized by hypertension and arteriolar vasoconstriction, which decrease the uteroplacental perfusion and ultimately result in placental hypoxia which if long lasts can impair fetal growth
The results of this study showed that, When the cut-off point for serum CA-125 concentrations was accepted as 66 IU/ml, the sensitivity of 90.0%, specificity of 92.19%, positive and negative predictive values of 78.3% and 96.7% respectively for the confirmation of preeclamptic pregnancies.
We can also infer that, when a patient is screened for pre-eclampisa using the CA-125 as a biomarker, a cut off of >37 can be predictive of the latter development of SPE, with a sensitivity and specififty of 85% and 84.9% respectively.
