HASSAN ABDEL-SALAM ALI HAMOUDA;

Abstract

An epidemiological study was carried out on clinical mastitis in some dairy farms and animals raised individually in Bchera province. The annual incidence of mastitis was 14.4 cases per 100 cows per year in dairy farms.

Most cases of mastitis were reported in early lactation (19.1%) followed by 7-9 months of lactation. Concerning lactation order, the highest incidence of mastitis was observed in lactation number five while the lowest incidence was in lactation number two. Also, the highest incidence of mastitis was recorded in cows above 7 years old. The rear quarters had a higher rate of mastitis (60%) than the font quarters (40%).

The effect of some diseases on the incidence of mastitis was studied. High rates of mastitis was observed in cattle previously infected with mastitis, cattle suffering from endometritis and cattle suffering from lameness indicating that these diseases are predisposing for mastitis.

The most frequent bacterial isolates detected in cases of mastitis were Staphylococcus aureus (24.8%), coagulase-negative Staphylococci ( 10.1%), Streptococcus agalactiae ( 16.5%), Streptococcus dysgalacu:ae (8%), Streptococcus ubris (2.6%),
