Etiological Classification of RecurrentNon-InfectiveUveitis
Ahmed Yehia Hassan Mohamed Elmazaly;
Abstract
Uveitis is a form of eye inflammation. It affects the middle layer of tissue in the eye wall (uvea). Uveitis warning signs often come on suddenly and get worse quickly. They include eye redness, pain and blurred vision. The condition can affect one or both eyes. It primarily affects people ages 20 to 50, but it may also affect children. Possible causes of uveitis are infection, injury, autoimmune or inflammatory disease. Many times a cause can't be identified. Uveitis can be serious, leading to permanent vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent the complications of uveitis.
The aim of the present study was to identify the demographic, clinical and laboratory features of patients with recurrent, non-infectious, systemic disease-associated autoimmune uveitis, and to report causes of defective vision or blindness (if present) in those patients.
In the present study, it was found that the mean age was 37.93 years ±12.31SD with male predominance (65%) mostly from urban areas being 94% from Cairo with Behçet uveitis represented the main etiology (94%) which was mainly presented by bilateral anterior uveitis (38%) with 10% had cataract, 6% had glaucoma and 3% had lost their vision.
Another study was conducted in Egypt showed very similar results to ours, in which 38 patients of Behçet uveitis, 63.2% were male and 36.8% were female with the mean agewas 31.5 years ±7.1SD.
Many studiesfound that cataract was the most common ocular complication, followed by macular edema sequelae, glaucoma, optic disc paleness, and branch retinal vein occlusion.
