Statistics of Pediatric Stroke in Pediatric Hospital at Ain Shams University in Last Five Years

Abstract


• Stroke is one of the top causes of childhood death in high income countries and it is increasly recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality, so strategies to improve early recognition and management of stroke are urgently required for the pediatric population.
• In this study, we tried to focus on the incidence, etiological factors, clinical presentation, investigations, and most applicable protocols for treatment and morbidity and mortality rates. These data were compared to (AHA) for diagnosis and management of stroke to approve a stroke protocol to be applicable for pediatric neurology department.
• Our study is a retrospective study conducted on 40 stroke patients recruited from the Pediatric Hospital in Ain Shams University from the period of January 2010 till December 2014. The studied patients age ranged from 1 month till 18 years.
• Our study showed that, 10% of patients aged less than one year, 65% from 1-5 years, and 25% were more than 5 years. Regarding sex distribution; 60% of patients were males and 40% were females.
