Impacts of Wind Turbines on Power System Stability

Abstract
This Thesis deals with the importance of minimizing the production of electricity from conventional generators to reduce the harmful effects to the environment and devoted to the production of electric energy fromavailable new and renewable energy resources. Generation of electricity from wind, wind turbines, is considered one of the most important sources of electrical power generation. Published annual reports of the new and renewable energy authority ,NREA, plans that by 2030, 7200 MW of generation will be produced from wind stations where the commission adopted a new and encouraging private sector plans specifically to invest in that direction. This highlights the importance of the thesis submitted to see the effect of this wind generating system on the electric power system stability. The presence of a large number of wind generators may affect differently the power system stability for the electric network than in the case of conventional synchronous generators found often in thermal power stations.
In the presented thesis, studies have been carried out for dynamic and transient stability in the presence of conventional generators and generators using large wind turbines of two types; fixed speed wind generator and doubly fed induction generator. Simulation results show that the power system stability with large wind farms is further reliable and stable. Furthermore, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has more positive damping effect than fixed speed induction generator. Extracted results have been compared with other previous research works to ensure the validity and accuracy of the presented work. A Journal paper, from this thesis, has been extracted and published.
