MINI-IMPLANT ORTHODONTIC ANCHORAGE FOR MAXILLARY CANINE RETRACTION

Hatem Salah Ibrahim Saif El Din;

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of mini-implant orthodontic anchorage in maxillary canine retraction.
A prospective controlled study was conducted to evaluate the outcome of using mini-implants for canine retraction. A sample of 10 subjects with an age range 20 to 28 years was included in this study.
Subjects for this study were selected from the “waiting list” of the outpatient clinic of the Orthodontic Department, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Ain Shams University. Patients who had full orthodontic records with their treatment plan involving extraction of two maxillary premolars were reviewed and those who met the inclusion criteria were selected for this study.
Patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two equal groups. Group I: maxillary canines were retracted against molar anchorage, Group II: maxillary canines were retracted against mini-implant anchorage.
After obtaining the pre-treatment records, patients in both groups were treated with the preadjusted edgewise appliance system. Successive archwires were used until completion of leveling and alignment. For each subject, bilateral extraction of the maxillary first premolars as a preparatory stage for canine

retraction was carried out. 0.018 stainless steel wire was placed to in the maxillary arch. To ensure that the wire was passive, it was left in place for at least 4 weeks before initiating retraction.
