Abstract

The present investigation was planned to study the toxic effect of phenol on immune responses of Oreochromis niloticus (0. niloticus )

Clinical and pathological manifestations, phagocytic activity and some serum biochemical constituents, as well as antibody response to antigenic stimulation were the parameters used for evaluation of the toxic effects. Moreover, the ability of phenol to accumulate in muscles of toxicated fish was studied.

The trials to overcome the toxic effect of phenol on Immtme responses of 0. niloticus by using Biogen was also investigated.

The obtained results are pointed out as following:

);> The maxnnum tol erable level asseS'Sment of phenol in 0. niloticus

was 30 ppm

);> Acute toxic exposure to levels more than 30 ppm for one week produced, respiratory manifestation, hyperirritability followed by lethargy and disappearance of escape reflex perior to death. Gross Showings inc1uded increase mucus secretion, dark discolouration of the skin and fin erosion.

);> Alterations in organs were in the form of con gestion of gills, liver and distention of gall bladder. Mild clinical signs and PM Showings
