Biological Effect and Sealing Ability of Bioactive Glass "S53P4" as a Repair Material in Furcation Perforation

MOHAMED IBRAHIM RABIE;

Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold; the initial phase was to histologically evaluate the healing of furcation perforations in dogs' teeth after repair with bioactive glass S53P4 and compare it with light-cured glass ionomer cement Vitrebond. The second phase of this work was an in vitro study, to examine the sealing ability ofbioactive glass S53P4 as a furcal perforation repair material through dye penetration study and SEM observation.
The results of the animal study revealed a significant difference in
histological reactions to the bioactive glass and glass ionomer cement in term of bone reaction, inflammation, epithelial proliferation, and periodontal ligament regeneration. Teeth repaired with glass ionomer cement achieved more favorable prognosis than those repaired with bioactive glass. The fmdings of the in vitro study showed that Glass ionomer cement was found to have better sealing ability than bioactive glass. SEM examination of selected samples repaired with glass ionomer cement showed better adaptation to dentinal walls than those repaired with bioactive glass.
