Clinical Applications Of Ultrasound Biomicroscopy In Ophthalmology

Aldemerdash Ahmed Omar;

Abstract

Ophthalmic ultrasound IS a well-proven tool in ophthalmology. Ultrasound biomicroscopy extends the use of ophthalmic ultrasound in a • manner analogous to optical microscopy. Higher resolution allows appreciation of_ structural details not resolved by current. imaging -.•-o• techniques. UBM can image anterior segment structures that can not be •-••••'•• visualized optically.

UBM is an adjunct to slit lamp examination with Goldman mirror for visualizing the configuration of the iris root and ciliary body in classification of glaucoma. It can identify various types of glaucoma and their mechanisms.

UBM can demonstrate angle recession, iridodialysis, cyclodialysis and intraocular foreign body in the anterior segment. Tumors of the peripheral choroid and iris are easily accomplished by the UBM. Detailed corneal thickness in any meridian can be obtained. Opacification of the cornea by edema or blood in the anterior chamber makes no difficulty to the teclmique.

Corneal changes following refractive surgery, or the position of phakic intraocular lenses together with the position of either anterior or posterior chamber intraocular lens haptics.

Scleral diseases such as episcleritis and scleritis are will differentiated as will as• different types of scleritis.Finally UBM can diagnose various diseases such as peripheral ocular toxocariasis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, intermediate uveitis.
