CAUSATIVE ORGANISMS OF NOSOCOMIAL PNEUMONIA &THEIR ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY PATTERNS
Ahmad Zain A. Badawy;
Abstract
Nosocomial infection is any infection that develops during hospital stay from which the patient was not suffering or incubating at the time of admission to the hospital.It presents a major source of revenue loss, morbidity and even mortality .
Nosocomial pneumonia represents a significant proportion of all hospital
acquired infection and is the most lethal hospital acquired infection which led many anthers to call it "Terminal bronchopneumonia". It is considered the second most common nosocomial infection in the United States following urinary tract infection. Most nosocomial pneumonias are caused by gram-negative bacilli, which represent
50-70% of infections.
Administration of antibiotics is the main line in treating nosocomial pneumonia and must be early, prompt and by necessity empiric. As antibiotics are absorbing large parts of drug budgets in major hospitals, an overview of the antibiotics used in different indications is done, aiming at optomization of the antibiotics used by knowing which is the most effective. In addition to this, a system should be developed to provide a suitable regimen and adequate dose needed for each case.
