Standing Laparotomy in donkeys using acupuncture analgesia

Abstract


Electro-acupuncture analgesia of flank region was performed m standing position in 21 clinically apparent healthy donkeys (12 females and 9 males). The analgesic effect was confirmed in 10 cases by standing laparotomies and exploration of abdominal contents.

Twenty seven acupoints were selected and tested which gave the opportunity to obtain three techniques to induce loss of sensation of flank region :

Technique (1) combination of 13 acupoints as follow :
62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69,72 (4locations) 127, 131, 132 nd
133, in two regions (needling sites) !umbo sacral (Bai Hui), lumbar, scaral and gluteal.

Technique (2) combination of 16 acupoints as follow :
46 ( 3 locations), 47, 48, 62,63, 64, 65, 66,67, 68, 70, 71,
72 (4 locations), 127, 132 and 133, in three regions (needling sites): dorsal column, lumbar, sacral and gluteal.

Technique (3) combination of 18 acupoints as follow :
46 ( 3 locations),47, 48, 68, 69, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125,
126, 127, 128, 129, 131, 132 and 133, in two regions (needling sites) : dorsal column and gluteal.

The needles were stimulated at different frequencies and intensities : 300 - 800 Hz several times until the desired depth of
analgesia obtained.
