Environmental Study on Lake Temsah Pollution by Some Heavy Metals

Attwa Hussien A. Attwa;

Abstract

Environmental study on industrial, agricultural and domestic wastes pollution of Lake Temsah have been carried out. Seven sites have been chosen, different in type and quantity of wastes, these sites are starting from Arab contractors shipyard workshop at the south to. the SCA Press outfall at the north, passing by the junction between the Western Lagoon and Lake Temsah, El-Tcmsah workshop (SCA), El-Forsan drain outfall to the lake, El-Temsah shipyard (private. workshop), El-Karakat workshop (SCA) and SCA Press. Physico-
. chemical characteristics of lake waters have been studied and eight of heavy metal concentrations have been estimated together, in water, sediment, aquatic weeds (waster hyacinth, common reed) and shellfish in four different seasons; summer & autumn 1995 and winter & spring 1996. The mean values of results for different samples of the studied components have been calculated and tabulated. Accordingly, the area PLI scors for Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd values in lake-water TSS have been estimated as follows : Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd eventual view was formulated in a descending order elaborating the comparative burden of the chosen sites with the concerned heavy metals, as follows : F > C > B > D > G > A> E.
The general results of this study reveal that pollution is directly related to the type of the activity taking place in each site. However the Lake-waters and beaches proved to be relatively polluted according to international standards Strict regulations that must be followed in order to minimize this pollution specially by heavy metals from marine workshops.
