METABOLIC AND IMMUNOLOGICAL RESPONSES AFTER HEAD INJURY
Hany Kamal Micklwel;
Abstract
Reliable outcome prediction of traumatic brain injury remams difficult despite major progress in cerebral monitoring and 1magmg techniques. Hence, there is a need for supplementary tests to enable early prediction of management outcome.
This study has been carried out 111 the Intensive Care Unit 111
El-Minia University Hospital after approval of anesthesia department in the period from October (200 I) to June (2003 ).
The study included 24 patients with moderate head trauma (GCS
score= 9-12), without other significant injuries.
After initial resuscitation to correct hypoxia and hypotension if present, routine intensive care managements were done for every patient. At the same time, paired jugular venous and arterial blood samples were taken at admission then at 24, 48 and 72 hours for analysis of S-1 DOn protein, interleukin-1 8 and i nterlcukin-6. tumour necrosis l tclor.,.. J\ I so. venous blood sample was taken at admission then at 24. 48 and 72 hours for measurement of serum triglycerides and blood sugar.
Blood samples were taken routinelv at regular inteJYals for analysis of blood gases and measurements of serum sodium and potassium. A single venous blood sample was taken from 24 healthy volunteers to be considered as a control for the laboratory work.
