Abstract

Foldable intraocular lenses after small cataract incision achjeved

many advantages as early rehabilitation, less postoperative inflammation, less iatrogenic astigmatism and perfect visual outcome [Kohnen et al., 1996/

Nowadays, the great innovation in IOLs manufacture expressed many generations of different materials to fulfill all the ophthalrillc requirements.

Our study was carried on selected 40 eyes of 40 patients from the outpatient clinic of ophthahnic deopartment, Cairo Uruversity. They were divided into group (I) wruch included 20 eyes implanted with silicone IOLs and group (II) which included 20 eyes implanted with acrylic IOLs.

Phacoemulsification was done to all cases then followed up postoperatively for 6 months. Comparison between signjficant intraoperative and postoperative complications of silicone and acrylic groups were as follows respectively,:

1) Folding problems:

Silicone group: slippage of IOL (5%) and haptic damage 5%

Acrylic group: optic damage (5%) and delayed intraocular unfolding

(5%).

2) Iritis: grade 3,4 during pr week: 30% and 30%
