Abeer Ezzat E l Sayed Mohamed;
Abstract
This study is carried out to compare different methods to characterize nosocomial S. aureus strains isolated from Suez Canal University Hospitals in lsmailia. Characterization was done using phe:notypic markers: biotyping and antibiogram and genotypic markers: plasmid. profile and pulsed field gel electrophoresis.
Specimens were collected from 210 patients, 72 staff members and 30 different environmental swabs (Total = 312), within a period of6 months from January to June 1999.
Swabs from Post-operative wound infections and sputum from patients of respiratory tract infection were collected. Hand and nasal swabs from medical staff members were taken. Environmental swabs from .instrumental and dressing tables, dressing trolly, bedrails, floors, walls, operating rooms were also collected.
Isolated S. aureus were typed phenotypically by biotyping and antibiogram and genotypically by plasmid profile and pulsed field gel electrophoresis.
