Outcome of totale proctocolectomy and ILEALPOUCH-ANAL ANASTOMOSiS FOR CHRONIC ULCERATIVE COLITIS
ADEL MOURAD ABDALLAH;
Abstract
Ulcerative colitis characteristically affects young individuals, although it can affect patients in their 40s, 50s or later. The disease usually begins in the rectum and distal colon and, in many cases, extends proximally to affect the entire colon. Typically, the presenting symptom is diarrhoea, which is often watery and bloody.
For the majority of patients with ulcerative colitis, the
disease can be managed with medical therapy, but 10% may require surgery at some point during their lifetime
The main indications for proceeding to surgery are acute
disease not responding to medical therapy, development of complications and presence of chronic continuous disease.
