Arrhythmias Associated With Mitral Valve Prolapse In Children

Soad Fayek Badr;

Abstract

Mitral valve prolapse is a common disorder which ajfects nearly 2-5% of the population .It may be associated with arrhythmias .
The aim of this study is to detect these arrhythmias, their types, their frequency.

and the risk factors which may increase their incidence.

The study revealed that mitral valve prolapse may be associated with many types OJ arrhythmias in about 70 % of cases as supraventricular or ventricular premature beats, sinus tachycardia,and conduction abnormalities.The twelve leads ECG is not sufficient alone to detect arrhythmias associated with mitral valve prolapse hut ff,.fter monitoring is more sensitive and accurate. The risk factors for occurance of arrhythmias include: the age of the patient, male gender, the degree of prolapse, and the presence of mitral
regurge.
In recommendation patients with mitral valve prolapse need periodic.follow up by echocardiography to detect progression of the disease and occurrence of mitral regurge
,and also by Holter monitoring especially those who are going to joi 0rt activitie< to

detect arrhythmias early and to control them medically to prevent the sudden death which

may occur in some patients.
