Developing Job Description for the Staff Nurses Working at Intensive Care Units in Ain Shams University

Abstract


Job description is the first step to improve quality of care as it involves organizational relationship, responsibilities specific duties and working condition for staff nurses working in Intensive Care Units. It is the critical place rendering massive care for critical patient and needs for the most highly qualified staff to provide better nursing care with well experience.

The aim of this study was to: 1) identifY activities perfonned by staff nurses working in Intensive Care Units,
2) delineate the activites which should be perfonned by Intensive Care Nurse, 3) compare actual perfonnance with the ideal, based on literature review, experts' openion and past experience of the investigator, and 4) develop job description for staff nurse working in Intensive Care Units.

Study settings:

The study was conducted in the Intensive Care Units at Ain Shams University Hospitals (Ain Shams University, Specialized Hospital, and EI-Demerdash).

Study subjects:

A total number of 145 subjects participated in the study. These included; 25 of the available physicians, 90 staff nurses with diploma degree in nursing, and 30 nurses leaders with diploma or speciality in nursing, as well as, Bachelor Degree.
