Abstract
Recently, certain forms of dietary fiber have been used successfully to '
treat many diseases. Nevertheless, only few studies were carried out by using'
natural fiber foods to assess the clinical utility of fibers for high cholesterol:
patients.
The rum of this works was to investigate the biochemical changes that
may occur to rats fed on cholesterol diets and dietary fibers. Control group
were fed on basal diets with or without 1% cholesterol. The experiment was
carried out on 48 male albino rats distributed on three major groups that werb
divided into 3 subgroups, besides the control groups (each of 4 rats). These rats
were kept on experimental diets 1, 3 and 5% fibers for 4 week Fiber source.s
used were apple, broad bean and carrots.
At the end of experiment, the animals were sacrificed and the collected
blood samples were used for several biochemical analysis, which were total
lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HD ),
low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), alkaline phosphatase, albumin,
protein, uric acid, creatinine, glotamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and
glotamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT).
The obtained results revealed the following:
Biochemical analysis
1. Serum total lipids significantly decreased in rats fed on different fibers,
while significant increases were found in rats fed on 1% cholesterol. For 3
and 5% fiber gr91).pi\. & ;rum without 1% cholesterol diet.
