Serum Levels of Some Micornutrients (Folic Acid, Molybdenum, Selenium ) In Pregnant Women And Their Newborns In Different Socioeconomic Standards
Hemmat Youssif Mohamed;
Abstract
Serum levels of some Micronutrients (Folic acid - molybdenum - Selenium) In pregnant women and their newborns in different socioeconomic standards.
Ain Shams University, Institute of Postgraduate childhood studies - Medical Studies Department.
The aim of the study was to measure serum folic acid, selenium and molybdenum in pregnant women as well as their newborns and to correlate between deficiency of any of these micronutrients and some anthropometries measurement. Also to observe any congenital defects on the newborn after delivery in relation to concentration of these micronutrients in their serum. The study was carried out in Ain Shams University Hospital and AI Galaa Hospital. It included 100 healthy pregnant women and their newborns (100), 50 were nonnaly delivered (S.V.D) and 50 were delivered by cesarean section.
Serum Se and Mo were assessed using atomic absorption method while folic acid and vit Bl2 were assessed by radioimmunoassay method. For these pregnant women and their newborns, full medical history, complete clinical examination and assessment of socioeconomic status were done. There was a highly significant correlation between
maternal and newborns folate and vit B12 serum levels. (P <
0.01). Also, there was a highly significant correlation between maternal folate and vit B12 and congenital defects in newborns (P 0.05). Also, there was no significant correlation between either maternal or newborns selenium - Molybdenum - folic acid and vit Bl2 serum levels and anthropoemetric measurements in those newborns (P > 0.05).
