Apoptosis as biomarkers in sonte anuran amphibian from Egypt

Aliaa Ragheb Mohammad Ibrahim;

Abstract

As amphibian's life cycles generally include both an aquatic and a terrestrial phase to

environmental pollutants. There are reliable indicators of environmental pollution than other vertebr::1tes, because their eggs are not protected by semi-impervious membrane and their skin is water permeable. This implies that pollutants can easily enter their body and damage critical organs. Bufo regularis (Bufonidae) and Rana bedriagae (Ranidae) are a water anurans widely distributed in Egypt, and is a good bi.oindicator of species.

The aim of the study was (1) to assess the various histological .and immunological alternations, observed in toads (Bufo regularis) and frogs (Rana bedriagae) collected from a small branch ofNile River, called El Mansuriya, approximately 10 km southeast of from the city of Giza, an area earlier classified as moderately to heavily polluted by heavy metals, and (2) to compare the data with those of toads and frogs collected from the area of Abu Rawash, some 10 . km northeast of Giza at an altitude of 1100 m. We conducted a field and laboratory study to investigate whether trace element accumulation differs between two species of anuran and among nearby polluted and unpolluted sites.

In this study adult Bufo regularis and Rana bedriagae of both sexes were collected in 2006 and 2007 at twice field, the first heavily polluted by the water of the Nile River (near Giza) and the second, the control field flood with spring water, relatively unpolluted (near Giza). It found that El Mansoria area collects industrial and human waste and its water thus host a variety of persistent contaminations, heavy metals and organic micropollutants. From water analysis it found that element concentrations are differed among the control area (Abu Rawash) and polluted area (El Mansuriya). Chemical analysis conducted on water from the polluted site showed high concentrations of potentially toxic trace element, mainly Fe, Mg, Zn and Cd which is considered to be toxic for various vertebrates.
