ASSESSMENT OF PHYSICAL ERGONOMICS RISK FACTORS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON QUALITY IN MEDICAL LABORATORIES
Wael Mohamed Ahmed Hamed;
Abstract
Introduction: Medical Laboratory workersare exposed to many physicalergonomicriskfactorsandergonomicstressorsduringroutine laboratory work that may result in formation of work related musculoskeletal disorders and affect qualityin work environment. Objective:Theaimofthisstudyistoidentifythedifferentphysical ergonomicsriskfactorsthatworkersmaybeexposedtotheminmedical laboratories,associationwithlaboratoryergonomicstressors,occurrence ofworkrelatedmusculoskeletaldisordersandassesseffectsonquality in medical laboratories.
Subjectsandmethods:ThisstudyisDescriptivecross-sectionalstudy for 80workers in medicalforensiclaboratoriesinCairo.The collected data fromdesigned Questionnaire, clinical examination and investigations wereprocessed and analyzed.
Results: Neckand upperextremitymusculoskeletal disorderswere found among 42.5%ofthesamplesize,relatedtoage,workperiod,awkward body positionwithnonergonomicchairandcontactstress.Back musculoskeletaldisorderswere foundamong31.3%ofthesamplesize, relatedtoworkperiod,staticpostureduetoinsufficientleg roomand awkwardbody positionwithnonergonomicchair.Lowerlimbs musculoskeletaldisorderrelatedtoheight,weight,staticposturedueto insufficientleg roomandnolabbenchanti-fatiguemat.Laboratory workershave littleawarenesswithergonomic principles.These factors decreasesafety,productivity andqualityoflifeinthelaboratorywork environment.
Conclusion:Themostnotable resultfromthestudy wasrepetitive movementisthemainphysicalergonomic riskfactorposessignificant riskforoccurrenceofmusculoskeletaldisordersinmedicallaboratories,

Recommendations:Ergonomic designof the laboratory.Medical laboratory workersmustbeawaredwiththeprotectivemeasuresto eliminateorreduceergonomicstressorsduring routinelaboratory proceduresthroughergonomictrainingprogram.Providing management leadershipand employeeinvolvementintheidentification,correction and elimination ofsuchrisk factors.
