Perioperative hypoxia: a new look at an old problem

Abstract
Hypoxia is defined as decreased oxygen tension at any location inside or outside the body. In common usage, hypoxia means decreased oxygen supply to the tissues. Hypoxemia is defined as decreased oxygen levels in the blood (e.g., decreased Pv02 or decreased Pa02). This essay is divided into two parts: clinical spectrum of hypoxia (part I) and oxygen monitoring (part II).
