EFFECT OF SOME ADDITIVES ON PAPER PROPERTIES

AHMED ALI EL-GENDY;

Abstract

Additives play an important role in papennaking. In fact, almost
all paper types contain one or more addd nonfibrous substance. These additives modify sheet properties in or¢er that paper meets the specific
requirements for its intended use.

Wood is the conventional raw material for pulp production.
Egypt suffers from lack afforests. Consequently, agricultural residues
are the main lignocellulosic source iii Egypt. Rice straw and sugar

cane bagasse are now used in Egypt1 for pulp production. It is worth mentioning that, properties of paper 1 made from agricultural residues
i
pulp are inferior in comparison to paper made from wood pulp.

I
The main object of this thesis is to study the influence of some additives on properties of paper madb from indigenous raw materials. Bagasse pulp industrially produced at Edfo factory, in upper Egypt, is
I
selected as the fibrous raw material in the present study. The aim of
1

• this work is to investigate the possibility of improving the properties of paper prepared from bagasse pulp tHrough the use of some additives.
Two additives prepared from indigenous raw materials - namely upgraded Egyptian kaolin and hei icellulose- are introduced and
I
investigated as filler and strength promoter for bagasse pulp. Other
I
commercial additives such as starch i and urea-fonnaldehyde are also selected for the present study.
