Summary & Conclusion

Bone marrow transplantation is widely applied in management of different diseases. The myeloablation and immunosuppression that accompany BMT result in a variety of infectious complications with high morbidity and mortality.

Twenty-three patients were admitted to BMT unit of the El Mania! Specialized Hospital Cairo Hospital for PBSCT at the time between April 1998 to June 2000.They were studied for the occurrence of infectious complications.

The study consisted of three phases : pre-transplant, during hospitalization for transplantation and follow-up after discharge.

The pre-transplant study included virology and bacteriology work
up for detection of any active or latent viral infection and colonization of infection by any bacterial pathogen.

Twenty-one patients were seropositive for CMV lgG, 20 were seropositive for HSV I lgG, 10 were seropositive for toxoplasma lgG,
one was seropositive for HBsAg and 3 were seropositive for HCV
• antibodies but non had positive HCV viremia.
