Prevalence of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease in type 2 diabetic patients
Haythem Ahmed Kamal Hamed;
Abstract
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common complication of type-2 diabetes. PAD occurs earlier in diabetic than in non-diabetic individuals in whom the disease is more severe and diffuse.
The aim of our cross sectional study is to estimate the prevalence of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease in a sample of 150 type 2 diabetic Egyptian candidate Using Ankle brachial index,
We found aprevalence of asymptomatic PAD (ABI values < 0.9) in 24% of our type 2 diabetics.
Studying possible association of PAD with different risk factors revealed significant association with PAD were higher in people with longer duration of diabetes(p 0.009), hypertension (p 0.027) , smoking (p 0.016), obesity (p <0.001), and peripheral neuropathy (p <0.001).
Whereas gender, CAD history, CVS history, and family history of PAD was not significantly associated with PAD
We did not also find significant correlation between Age, high total cholesterol, LDL, HbA1c and peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
RECOMMENDATIONS
Screening for PAD should be considered in patients with type 2 diabetes especially those with high risk factors (longer diabetes duration hypertension, smoking, obesity, peripheral neuropathy).
Screening should be done as a routine outpatient clinics even before the development of symptoms (claudication)
Further studies, with a larger sample size, are needed to create a model for risk prediction of PAD among asymptomatic type 2 diabetics to be utilized for early intervention and primary prevention
