Abstract
Two experiments were conducted in the present study. Experiment 1 was designed to study the efficiency of replacing yellow com and soybean meal with different levels of air dried azolla on performance of broiler chicks. A total number of one hundred and fifty unsexed one-day old Arbor Acres broiler type chicks were used in the experiment.
Experiment 2 was designed to study the effect of diet restriction with free fresh azolla supplementation on layer performance. One thousand and six hundreds one-day fayoumi chicks were used in the experiment.
Concerning experiment 1, the results obtained during the entire period (7 weeks of age) were as follows:
1-At the end of experiment (7week of age) the control group achieved the heaviest LBW and LBW which were reduced by raising air dried azolla level. Replacing yellow corn and soybean meal by dried azolla up to 5% was without any deleterious effect on the growth during the entire period
2-No significant differences in FI were detected between the different groups, and the control group (0% air dried azolla) recorded the least amount of FI
3-The control group recorded the best LBWG while the group of I 0% air dried azolla recorded the worst LBWG.
4-FC, FI, CPC and CER deteriorated by raising air dried azolla level in the diet of
broiler chicks.
5-PI was reduced by increasing air dried azolla level on the diet of broiler chicks.
6-Addition of air dried azolla in the diet of broiler chicks had no appreciable effect on both the slaughter characteristics and the chemical composition of carcass flesh meat.
7-No decline in Hb and PCV% was observed indicating no anemic effect due to
addition of air dried azolla.
8- Addition of air dried azolla to broiler chicks diet had no appreciable effect on
plasma total protein, albumin, triglycridetotal cholesterol, total lipid, uric acid, calcium, phosphorus, GOT and GPT activities.
9-Mortality rate increased with increasing air dried azolla.
I 0-Economic efficiency was reduced by increasing the level of air dried azolla in the diet.
