PLASMA LEPTIN IN NEONATES OF NORMAL AND DIABETIC MOTHERS

Ahmed Abd El -Samei Mohamed;

Abstract

Leptin is a 167 amino acids honnone, that is expressed and secreted exclusively from adipocytes, functioning as a metabolic regulator to control body weight through inducing satiety and influencing thermogenesis and energy expenditure.

Newborns exhibit levels of circulating leptin totally comparable to those found in the adult population, moreover, it has been found that cord leptin correlates with birth weight.

The aim of this study was to characterize serum leptin in neonates of nonnal and diabetic mothers and to study the relation of cord leptin to the type and degree of control of diabetes mellitus during pregnancy.

The study was conducted on 67 newborns divided into three groups:

• Group (1): Included 20 neonates born to mothers with pregestational insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

• Group (2): Included 20 neonates born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus.

• Group (3): Included 27 neonates born to normal mothers. (control group).
