Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) in a S. haematobium endemic area in Egypt

Abstract
he study aimed to explore the occurrence of the disease entity called FGS (Female Genital Schistosomiasis) in a small rural population. The study also aimed to estimate the extent of some items of reproductive morbidity among the women of the studied sample. A small village was selected in Fayoum governorate; From the village, all eligible women were included in the study. These added up to 126 women. All 126 women were interviewed by means of a comprehensive questionnaire. Of these 86 women underwent a clinical and gynecological examination and had a cervical smear and biopsy taken. In addition a routine urine examination was done.
Detection of schistosomiasis in urine was done by the simple sedimentation technique. FGS was diagnosed by the presence of schistosoma ova in the cervical smear or biopsy. An occurrence of 15% of FGS was discovered among the studied group of women. In addition a high prevalence of other reproductive tract morbidities such as reproductive tract infections and prolapse was discovered.
