VALIDATION OF TWIN AXIAL ELECTRO-GONIOMETER IN ANGULAR MEASUREMENT

RANIA REDA MOHAMED ABDOU;

Abstract

This study was conducted in the motion analysis lab. in the faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University during the period from February to September 2008, to investigate the validity of twin axial electrogoniometer for measuring Hip and Knee joints ROM during sit to stand movement.

Thirty normal subjects (11male, 19 female) participated in the study, their mean age was (26.1 ± 7.19) years, mean height was (164.63 ± 4.82) cm and mean weight was (65.13 ± 7.02), each subject was selected randomly from the students and the workers of the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University. The tester measured the hip and the knee joints range of motion during sit to stand movement by using the electrogoniometer and the three dimensional motion analysis systems for detection of the validity of the electrogoniometer.

The mean and SD as well as Pearson - correlation coefficient were used to determine the validity of twin axial electrogoniometer in measuring joints angles during activity of daily living such as sit to stand movement.

The finding in this study revealed that there are no significant differences in measuring joint angles (hip, knee) by the electrogoniometer and the 3DMA system during sit to stand so that the Twin Axial Electrogoniometer is considered a valid instrument for measuring joint angle during sit to stand movement.
