Ipsilateral Concomitant Fractures of Proximal Femur and Shaft
AHMED ADEL AAL EL- SID KHALED;
Abstract
Ipsilateral fractures of the proximal femur and femoral shaft diaphysis present diagnostic difficulties and complex choices as to treatment. The surgeon is often faced with a multiply injured patient with an obvious fracture of the femoral shaft.
In 20 -50 % of the cascil, the accompanying femoral neck
fracttrre can be overlooked. Most frequently, the missed fracture is minimally displaced
The incidence of concomitant femoral neck fractures with
femoral shaft. fracture has been found to be 5-6% other less common patterns include ipsilateral intertrochanteric and shaft fracture and neck, intertrochanteric, and shaft fractures,(Taylor,j
.c.,1992).
These combinations of injuries most commonly occur in cases of severe trauma such as automobile or motorcycle accidents (Bernstein,S.M.,1974).
Mackenzie • D.B; in 1971,explained the mechanism of injury to
be longitudenal compression along the axis of the femur with the hip in a position of abduction. With the hip abducted, the femoral head is stable in the acetabulum and can not dislocate posteriorly.
