Prevalence of Depression In Patients After Primary PCI Attending Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Seham Rhoma Abdulla;
Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression are significant public health concerns. Both have significant impact to each other (Baumeister et al., 2015. (
Cardiovascular diseases as well as depression are among the most frequent and most impairing diseases worldwide. Both are common causes for the frequent contacts with ambulatory and hospital services and for long-term utilization of health care (Mathers and Loncar., 2006).
Cardiovascular risk factors that have been associated with late-life depression include hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, heart disease, obesity and smoking (Naismith et al., 2012).
American Heart Association Scientific Statement on “Depression as a Risk in 2014 Factor for Poor Prognosis among Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome” came to the conclusion that “…the American Heart Association should elevate depression to the status of a risk factor for adverse medical outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (Lichtman et al., 2014)
The aim of this study was to assess The prevalence of Depression in Egyptian patients with documented CAD (post primary PCI) undergoing cardiac rehabilitation program .
Our study was conducted on 200 patientspresenting with history of recent MI &who underwent primary percutaneous intervention and attending cardiac rehabilitation clinic in Ain Shams University hospital.
All patients were subjected to history taking, physical examination, with revising of echocardiographic result , catheterizationresult, lab result and finallyPatients were requested to complete the PHQ-9 questionnaires themselves in same day.
We found that nearly half of our patients were depressed (49.5%), predominantly females (66.7%), however, there was no significant correlation with risk factors of CAD except significant correlation with systolic blood pressure.
While no significant correlation among depression with different site of myocardial ischemia, ECG, echo & lab finding.
