CONTAMINATION OF NEW DESERT LANDS NEAR PETROLEUM WELLS AT RAS-SUDR

Sayed Ahmed Saleh Ismail;

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the contamination impact and the hazardous effect of petroleum on sandy desertic soils.

A sandy soil from Ras-Sudr area near by a petroleum well was used in this study. Soil samples were taken at 50, 200 and 800 meters far from oil well in circles surrounding it. Five sites were selected for each circle distance. The soil samples were collected from three depths 0-15, 15-40 and
40-60 em• from each site. Pot experiment was conducted using wheat and corn as bioindicator plants in oil polluted soils at rates of 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5%.

Two different remedies were used at rate of 6% namely agrolic and bentonite to reduce the risk related to the presence of toxic petroleum products in soils.

The obtained results could be summarized as follows :

1- Composition of crude oil:

The crude oil taken from Ras-Sudr well represents a complex mixture of both inorganic and organic components. Trace metals are one group amongst the inorganic components. Fe and Mn are importantly present in large concentrations while Cd and Cu are found in low concentrations. Total petroleum hydrocarbons TPH represents 82.82% of the crude oil. The studied crude oil contains one basic hydrocarbon, paraffins (C11 to C32). Twelve various hydrocarbons found: Triacontane represents the greatest and Dodecane is the lowest.
