Abstract

Caesarean Section

Definition:

Caesarean section (CS) is defined as delivery of the fetus through an incision in the abdominal wall (laparotomy) and the uterine wall
(hystorotomy). (I)

Historical background:

Caesarean section is almost certainly one of the oldest operations in surgery, with its origin lost in antiquity and in ancient mythology. In early times, the maternal death rate was in the region of 70-80% and this is not surprising, as after removal of the child the uterus was not sutured.

In 1876, a dramatio modification was introduced, and this was amputation of the body of the uterus and fixing of the cervical stump to the lower angle of the abdominal wound where the bleeding could be controlled by pressure. Immediately the maternal mortality fell to about
half its previous figure..< 2)
