APPROACHESTO INTERNAL AUDITORY CANAL

Mohamed Abd Allah El Wardany;

Abstract

There is a broad spectrum of surgically treatable pathology in the area of CPA both intradural and extradural.
Lesions in the region of CPA present special problems in operative
management because of the many structures involved with access limited by bone and important neurovascular structures.
There are many surgical approaches to lesions at the CPA but any one is technically demanding and potentially hazardous.
To choose the best surgical approache, a throughout radiographic investigation should be completed in each case.
These radiographic studies provide details about the relative
position of the neurovascular structures, the origin off the lesion and its vascular supply. The most important factor in choosing the appropriate approach is to minimize or• eliminate brain stem retraction, other factors should be considered secondarily.
The approach which is frequently selected for CPA lesions is suboccipital retrosigmoid approach, m other situations, translabyrinthine approach is used, there's other approaches which are minimally used in CPA lesions surgery but the most important thing is to avoid brain stem or cranial nerves injury in this critical regwn.
