Staff Nurses' Perception of Work Environment and it's Relation to Patient Safety Culture

Abstract


The healthcare environment may be considered as an environment of constant change. In healthcare organizations, the image of the organizational culture plays a critical role in the success and the delivery of quality health care services, (Hoffart and Woods, 2010).
Healthcare organizations must move a ways from expecting perfection from providers and recognize that individuals make mistakes. A culture is encouraged and system improvements are made is needed to enhance the quality and safety of care provided to patients. this transformation requires a different approach to quality improvement; one where emphasis is placed on identification of errors and proactive identification of system problems that lead to errors. An analysis of system factors that influence medication errors occurrence an enhance reporting of errors is necessary to understand the culture aspects that enhance patient safety (Shanty, 2013)
Work environment was defined as the aggregate of the conditions, influences, forces, cultural values that influence or modify an individual's life in a community such as a clinic or clinical unit , Work environment is also defined as a work setting that takes a strategic and comprehensive approach to providing the physical, cultural, and psychosocial and work design conditions that maximize health and wellbeing of health providers, quality of patient outcomes and organizational performance (Cefali, 2011).
Work environment that supports professional nursing as well as the spirituality of nurses may contribute to quality of patient care, which begin with ensuring patient safety culture in a health care environment that is free of injury and harm caused by the process of healthcare (Koren, 2009). Therefore, providing work environment that magnetizes nurses fosters excellence becomes crucial to attracting and maintaining new graduates, improving new nurse turnover, and ensuring safe care (Kramer and Schmlenberg, 2008).
Patient is an individual waiting or under medical care and treatment, Safety is making sure that people are not harmed. ,patient safety is prevention of harm, freedom from accidental or preventable injuries produced by medical care (AHR,2007) ( Medical Dictionary, 2013).
Culture is the sum of attitudies, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. (High Relibility Organization, 2010).So,Patient safety culture is the norm in healthcare institutions,it refers to commitment and abilty of an organization to address issues that could lead to harm for patient as well as employees and may be of the key drives to reduce error rapidly,(AHRQ,2007)
