STUDY OF POST-TRAUMATIC AND POST-SURGICAL ABDOMINAL SEPSIS: CLINICAL, THERAPEUTIC, AND PROGNOSTIC ASPECTS IN CASES ADMITTED TO CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE DEPARTMENT IN ALEXANDRIA MAIN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
MOHAMED SALAH MOHAMED EL-HOFY;
Abstract
Intraabdominal peritonitis is a common but sometimes insidious cause of sepsis in critically ill patients. It most commonly occurs after previous abdominal trauma, infection and operation. On occasion, however, an intra-abdominal abscess may occur without prior abdominal disease, as a result of haemtogenous spread from distant infection.
The aim of this study was to study the prognostic factors in severe intra-abdominal sepsis managed in ICUs with probing the possible role of surgery in preventing multiple organ failure.
This study was carried out on 30 consecutive patients with documented post-traumatic or post surgical intra-abdominal sepsis admitted to ICU in Alexandria Main University Hospital constituted the material of this study.
The results of this study showed that 25 patients (83.3%) died and the remaining five patients (16.7%) recovered.
The range of age was 15- 78 years with a mean value of 45.36 :'::
23.80 years in non-survivors. It was 7 - 45 years with a mean value of
23.80 ± 13.85 years in survivors.
